Curiously, although Igualeja is almost certainly another of the innumerable villages of Moorish origin which cover these hills like sesame seeds on a bun, its name is derived from Latin rather than Arabic. It sits 693 metres above sea level, 15 kilometres from Ronda and a mere two hundred metres from the source of the río Genal. The trickle that eventually becomes the river emerges into the daylight from a cave at the entrance to the village, and stands around getting its breath and gathering its strength in a number of ponds before setting off down the mountain. If water could smoke cigarettes and talk about the weather, this is where it would do it. Villagers come to the site to picnic and wish the infant river well on its journey. In truth, this is only one of two springs that feed the Genal. The other one is actually longer, and has at least an equal right to call itself the river's source, but the Igualeja stream has traditionally taken the honour, and no-one seems inclined to argue.

The small town of Igualeja is on the way up from the Costa del Sol to Ronda, the first town we meet on entering the Ronda Mountains area by the Genal Valley. The road leaves behind the last curves of the Guadalmina Valley and heads into the small valley of the river Seco, a tributary of the Genal, between steep cliffs covered in pine trees on both sides. This is the best lookout point in the municipality, but if we keep going, passing by the access lane to the Nature Park of the Sierra de las Nieves, we find the Igualeja road just a little bit further on. For a few kilometres the landscape is scrubland, until we go into an area filled with chestnut trees, with the town of Igualeja in the middle. The mountainous terrain hardly allows us to distinguish between the small hills covered in olive trees and the huge chestnut trees.

El viajero que sube desde la costa a Ronda por la carretera de San Pedro, cuando se asoma a la comarca de la Serranía por el valle del Genal, lo primero que se encuentra es el municipio de Igualeja. Después de dejar las últimas rampas del valle del Guadalmina, la carretera entra en el pequeño valle del río Seco, afluente del Genal, entre profundos barrancos cubiertos de pinar que van rodeando hasta salir a las laderas descarnadas por la construcción de esta carretera en la Sierra de Cascajares. Y en este punto el municipio se convierte en el mejor mirador que se puede encontrar para contemplar la belleza del Valle del Genal.

Igualeja, donde nace el Genal
Mucha gente, sin saberlo, ya conoce en parte las tierras de Igualeja. Todo el que viaja entre Ronda y San Pedro de Alcántara, al subir o al bajar, ha pasado por una zona poblada de pinos donde la carretera se allana y presenta abundantes curvas. Se trata del rincón más escondido del Valle del Genal; numerosos arroyos de espumante caudal se despeñan desde las alturas durante el invierno y la primavera y buscan un único cauce en lo hondo. Es lo que se conoce técnicamente como cuenca de recepción. Al unirse todos ellos forman el Río Seco, que se une al Genal muy cerca del caserío de Igualeja, como a un kilómetro del nacimiento de éste. Esa zona de pinares es una de las riquezas de Igualeja. El pueblo se esconde en una cañada que queda muy por debajo de un imponente acantilado de piedra caliza por el que atraviesa la carretera comarcal, más abajo de una cantera de mármol que se anuncia al borde del camino como Mármoles Villagrande.
